Federal officials stated Monday that recent drone sightings include lawful drones, aircraft, and even stars mistaken for drones. A joint statement from the Department of Homeland Security, FBI, FAA, and Department of Defense explained the sightings involved commercial, hobbyist, and law enforcement drones, as well as helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft.

The FBI has received over 5,000 drone sighting reports in recent weeks, generating around 100 leads. The federal government has deployed advanced detection technology and observers to assist local investigations. Despite public concern, the White House assured Monday that the drones pose no national security threat, echoing earlier statements from federal agencies.

Officials urged Congress to pass legislation expanding counter-drone authorities to identify and mitigate future threats.

President-elect Donald Trump suggested the government knows the drones’ origins but is withholding details. “Our military knows where they took off from,” Trump said at Mar-a-Lago, implying the situation is under control but shrouded in secrecy.
