Donald Trump is set to campaign in Wilmington, North Carolina, this Saturday, a crucial battleground state for both parties. However, Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson, the GOP’s gubernatorial nominee and one of Trump’s top surrogates in the state, will not attend following a CNN report alleging Robinson’s involvement in lewd online posts. Robinson has denied the claims, calling them “salacious tabloid lies.”
Trump’s campaign distanced itself from the controversy, focusing on winning the state, which he narrowly carried in 2020. Robinson, who has been trailing Democrat Josh Stein in recent polls, could face broader GOP fallout over his continued candidacy. Democrats have already seized on the opportunity to link Trump and Robinson in campaign ads, including one from Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign highlighting Robinson’s support for a strict abortion ban.
North Carolina remains a key focus for both parties, with its gubernatorial race and tight presidential margins placing the state in the spotlight this fall.
