Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche confirmed he met with Ghislaine Maxwell, the convicted sex trafficker and longtime associate of Jeffrey Epstein, on Thursday as part of the Trump administration’s expanding investigation into the Epstein case. The interview, which will continue Friday, comes amid bipartisan demands for transparency and intensifying political scrutiny.
“The Department of Justice will share additional information… at the appropriate time,” Blanche said in a post on X.
Maxwell’s attorney, David Oscar Markus, said she answered every question “truthfully, honestly, and to the best of her ability,” without invoking privilege or refusing to cooperate.
Maxwell, sentenced to 20 years in 2022 for sex trafficking, has denied direct abuse and has petitioned the Supreme Court for a case review — a request the DOJ has urged be denied.
On Thursday, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer condemned the meeting. “Sending Donald Trump’s personal lawyer… to offer some kind of corrupt deal… just stinks of high corruption,” he said, referring to Blanche’s past role as Trump’s private attorney.
The controversy has paralyzed Congress. The House abruptly recessed Wednesday, abandoning efforts to force the release of Epstein files. Schumer called it the “Epstein Recess,” accusing Republicans of fleeing accountability.
