The Department of Justice (DOJ) announced it will monitor voting in Portage County, Ohio, citing concerns of voter intimidation linked to a social media post by Sheriff Bruce Zuchowski. The DOJ will deploy staff to ensure compliance with federal voting laws during early voting and on Election Day. The action follows complaints from voters about threats and surveillance related to the electoral process.
The scrutiny comes after Zuchowski, a Republican, posted on social media suggesting that if Vice President Kamala Harris wins the election, migrants should be sent to her supporters’ addresses. Critics viewed the post as a threat to Democrats, while supporters defended it as free speech. Zuchowski removed the post in September after the American Civil Liberties Union of Ohio demanded its removal and threatened legal action.
Portage County officials noted that DOJ monitoring is a common practice across the country and not unique to their county.
