The Department of Justice (DOJ) is seeking a 40-year prison sentence for David DePape, who was convicted of breaking into the home of former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and assaulting her husband, Paul Pelosi. DePape’s crimes were described by federal prosecutors as an “assault on our democracy and fundamental values.” They argued that while DePape was not convicted of terrorism, his actions amounted to it.

DePape, a supporter of far-right conspiracy theories, had intended to hold Nancy Pelosi hostage and interrogate her. He even threatened to “break her kneecaps” if he believed she was lying. DePape later apologized to Paul Pelosi during the trial, stating that he was not his intended target.

Prosecutors emphasized that the violent lessons DePape wanted to teach are not permitted in the U.S. They believe this case presents an opportunity to send a strong message to others harboring violent, ideologically motivated plans, asserting that such attacks will be punished to the full extent of the law.
