The Department of Justice has launched a federal grand jury investigation into New York Attorney General Letitia James, according to NPR sources familiar with the matter.

James, who won a civil fraud case against Donald Trump and his companies resulting in millions in penalties, has frequently been the target of Trump’s public criticism. The probe, led by the top federal prosecutor in Albany, is reportedly seeking more information about James’ handling of that lawsuit.

Sources say the DOJ is exploring whether James may have deprived Trump and his adult children of their rights in connection with the case. James’ attorney, Abbe Lowell, denounced the investigation as political retribution, calling it “an attack on the rule of law” and “a dangerous escalation.”

The DOJ has not commented publicly on the probe.
