The Justice Department announced Monday the largest health care fraud bust in U.S. history, charging more than 320 people and uncovering nearly $15 billion in fraudulent claims targeting federal programs like Medicare. The sweep includes 190 federal and 90 state-level cases, with $2.9 billion in confirmed losses.

Officials say transnational criminal organizations—with ties to Russia, Eastern Europe, and Pakistan—used stolen health data and identities to submit fake claims. In one case, dubbed Operation Gold Rush, defendants allegedly ran a $10 billion urinary catheter scam, buying up dozens of medical supply firms and filing claims under fake names.

Law enforcement seized over $245 million in cash, crypto, and luxury goods. Nearly 100 licensed medical professionals, including 25 doctors, were among those charged.

“These criminals didn’t just steal someone else’s money. They stole from you,” said DOJ Criminal Division Chief Matthew Galeotti. CMS Director Dr. Mehmet Oz warned that sophisticated syndicates are now exploiting the U.S. health care system at unprecedented scale.
