The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), created by President Trump, is under fire for posting misleading savings claims through its “Wall of Receipts” initiative. While DOGE asserts it has saved $170 billion for taxpayers, only $70.9 billion is itemized, and watchdogs question much of that.

A CBS News analysis found errors, including double counting and inflated savings estimates. One cited example involved a $38.7 million wastewater contract that DOGE claimed was canceled—yet both the contractor and CDC confirmed it remains active.

DOGE also listed $66 million in savings from a newly signed immigration support contract later “terminated for convenience.” Critics note this does not guarantee the service won’t be replaced—and may still incur costs.

Nat Malkus of the American Enterprise Institute estimates actual savings are closer to $80 billion. DOGE has also quietly deleted 96 entries, totaling $124.7 million in prior claimed savings.

Despite Elon Musk’s defense of DOGE’s transparency, questions remain about whether Congress will validate any actual taxpayer savings through formal rescission requests.
