The Walt Disney Co. has agreed to pay $43.25 million to settle a gender pay discrimination class-action lawsuit filed in 2019 by employee LaRonda Rasmussen. The case, which gained additional plaintiffs over time, alleged that Disney systematically paid women less than men in comparable roles, partly by basing starting salaries on prior pay, perpetuating gender-based disparities.
A labor economist’s analysis cited by the plaintiffs found a 2.01% female pay penalty from 2015 to 2022. Disney disputed the findings but chose to settle the case, with a spokesperson affirming the company’s commitment to fair pay.
Christine Webber, an attorney for the plaintiffs, praised the women who came forward, expressing hope the settlement will ensure fair practices at Disney in the future. A California judge granted class certification for the case in late 2023, and court approval of the settlement is pending.
