Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem announced Friday the termination of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for more than 520,000 Haitians, declaring conditions in Haiti have improved enough for repatriation. The designation expires August 3 and will be fully revoked on September 2.
“This decision restores integrity in our immigration system,” a DHS spokesperson stated. Haitians under TPS were initially admitted through a Biden-era parole program granting work permits and deportation protections. Noem reversed Biden’s extension, which would have run through February 2026.
The State Department currently warns U.S. citizens against travel to Haiti due to kidnappings, gang violence, and poor healthcare. Yet DHS claims environmental improvements justify the end of protected status.
Haitians are now urged to apply for legal immigration pathways or voluntarily depart via the CBP Home app. The app, previously known as CBP One, was revamped under President Trump’s administration.
The move follows a recent Supreme Court ruling enabling the Trump administration to pause the CHNV parole program, impacting nationals from Haiti, Cuba, Nicaragua, and Venezuela.
