The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said Monday that Rasha Alawieh, the deported Brown University assistant professor, attended the funeral of Hezbollah’s former secretary-general, Hassan Nasrallah, in Lebanon earlier this year.

DHS described Nasrallah as “responsible for killing hundreds of Americans” and stated that Alawieh admitted her attendance to Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers.

“A visa is a privilege, not a right—glorifying and supporting terrorists who kill Americans is grounds for visa issuance to be denied,” DHS posted on X.

Alawieh, who was on an H-1B visa, was deported despite a judge’s order allowing her to remain in the U.S.. The federal government later claimed agents were unaware of the ruling before executing her removal.

Court filings reviewed by Politico state Alawieh had “sympathetic” photos and videos of Hezbollah in a deleted folder on her phone. She reportedly told agents that she followed Nasrallah’s teachings “from a religious perspective” rather than a political one.
