Florida Governor Ron DeSantis referred to the Gulf of Mexico as the “Gulf of America” in an executive order Monday addressing an incoming winter storm. The language aligns with President Trump’s pledge during his inaugural address to rename the Gulf of Mexico, a proposal he previewed earlier this month.

“A short time from now, we are going to be changing the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the ‘Gulf of America,’” Trump declared, also vowing to restore the name “Mount McKinley” to Alaska’s Denali.

DeSantis, who attended Trump’s inauguration, has been vocal in his support of the president’s policies. Last week, he called for a special legislative session in Florida to facilitate the administration’s immigration agenda. The governor’s executive order noted that Arctic air interacting with the “Gulf of America” would bring severe winter weather to northern Florida beginning Tuesday.
