Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) announced Thursday plans to open a second migrant detention facility, converting the Baker Correctional Institution near Jacksonville into a center for migrants awaiting deportation. The move follows the recent opening of “Alligator Alcatraz” in the Everglades, built under President Trump’s immigration crackdown.

DeSantis dubbed the new site “Deportation Depot,” estimating development costs at $6 million. The existing prison has 1,300 beds, with plans to add at least 700 more. “There is a demand for this. I’m confident that it will be filled,” he said, adding he wants “aggressive processing and an aggressive deportation schedule.”

The announcement comes as courts review legal challenges to “Alligator Alcatraz” over detention authority and environmental compliance. DHS Secretary Kristi Noem confirmed the administration is discussing similar facilities with other GOP governors, with Indiana planning a “Speedway Slammer” center north of Indianapolis. FEMA recently launched a grant program to help states build detention facilities.
