The Department of Education will lay off nearly 50% of its workforce on Wednesday as the Trump administration continues deep cuts to the federal government. Employees were ordered to vacate the agency’s Washington, D.C., headquarters by Tuesday evening ahead of the layoffs and temporary closure.
The department, which had approximately 4,200 employees, will eliminate over 2,100 positions. Employees affected by the layoffs will receive 90 days of full pay and benefits, along with severance based on tenure. The agency will reopen Thursday.
Education Secretary Linda McMahon confirmed the layoffs are the first step toward President Trump’s goal of dismantling the department. While statutory programs such as Pell Grants and student loans will continue, the administration is pushing for broader decentralization of education funding.
Trump’s plan has received mixed reactions. Republicans, including Rep. Nancy Mace (R-S.C.), praised the move, while critics warn it could disrupt federal oversight of education policies.
