Denmark has announced a $1.5 billion defense package to enhance security in Greenland. Danish Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen described the timing as “ironic,” given President-elect Donald Trump’s recent call for U.S. ownership of the Arctic island. Poulsen clarified the plans were prearranged but emphasized Denmark’s willingness to cooperate with the U.S.
The package includes patrol boats, drones, sled dog teams, and additional personnel to strengthen Denmark’s Arctic presence. Greenland’s Prime Minister Múte Egede firmly rejected Trump’s remarks, asserting Greenland’s independence while expressing openness to collaboration.
Trump reiterated the necessity of U.S. control over Greenland, citing national security concerns, and has previously suggested purchasing the island. Greenland, self-governed but under Danish oversight for defense and foreign policy, is strategically vital as Arctic pathways open due to climate change.
Denmark, a NATO ally, works with Arctic nations like Canada and Finland, while the U.S. has also initiated its first new heavy polar icebreaker project in decades to counter Russian and Chinese influence in the region.
Trump has also suggested U.S. control of the Panama Canal and joked about Canada becoming the 51st state.
