Washington, D.C. — Democrats on the House Homeland Security Committee escalated their criticism of Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem on Tuesday, warning that she will face impeachment if she is not fired or resigns amid fallout from recent federal immigration enforcement deaths in Minnesota.
In a post on X, committee Democrats accused Noem of misleading the public about the fatal shooting of Alex Pretti, who was killed by federal immigration officers in Minneapolis. “Kristi Noem has destroyed public confidence in her ability to lead DHS,” the lawmakers wrote, saying she must be removed from office or face impeachment proceedings. The statement followed weeks of controversy surrounding the deaths of Pretti and Renee Good, both of whom were shot during encounters with federal immigration officials.
Noem previously described Pretti as having “attacked” officers and “brandishing” a firearm, labeling his actions as “domestic terrorism.” She made similar claims earlier this month about Good. Those remarks drew bipartisan scrutiny, with some Republicans publicly distancing themselves from her characterization of the incidents.
Sen. Ruben Gallego (D–Ariz.) said Noem’s statements about Pretti amounted to an “impeachable” offense, while Sen. John Fetterman (D–Pa.) urged President Donald Trump to fire her, arguing that her leadership undermines DHS’s mission. Trump, however, said Tuesday that Noem would not step down.
Noem is scheduled to testify before the Senate Judiciary Committee in early March. Separately, Senate Homeland Security Committee Chair Rand Paul (R–Ky.) has requested testimony from senior immigration officials as Congress increases oversight of enforcement operations.
