Capitol Hill Democrats are urging President Biden to use the remaining weeks of his term to secure federal agencies and policies against Donald Trump’s plans to overhaul the executive branch. Lawmakers propose aggressive executive actions to protect policy achievements and insulate departments like Justice and Defense from potential purges.
Rep. Jared Huffman (D-Calif.) emphasized the need for proactive planning, while Rep. Richard Neal (D-Mass.) cited the importance of taking bold actions in the lame-duck session. Democrats are concerned about Trump’s proposed government restructuring, including his creation of a “Department of Government Efficiency” led by Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy, aimed at slashing bureaucracy.
Proposed strategies include issuing executive orders, accelerating federal funding for Biden-era projects, and bolstering union contracts to protect federal workers. Rep. Jerry Nadler (D-N.Y.) highlighted the urgency of confirming Biden-appointed judges, while others called for preserving Ukraine aid and safeguarding public lands from development.
Despite acknowledging the limitations of executive actions, Democrats believe forcing Trump to reverse popular measures could emphasize differences between the parties. “He may do some anyway, just to make the point,” said Rep. Don Beyer (D-Va.).
