The Trump administration’s removal of roughly 600 books from Department of Defense (DoD) school libraries has prompted new legislation from House Democrats seeking to reverse the policy.

Reps. Jamie Raskin (D-MD) and Chrissy Houlahan (D-PA) introduced the “Stop Censoring Military Families Act” to restore access to the titles pulled after President Donald Trump’s inauguration in January. The administration ordered the removals under two executive directives — “Ending Radical Indoctrination in K-12 Schooling” and “Defending Women from Gender Ideology Extremism and Restoring Biological Truth to the Federal Government.”

Houlahan said it was “disturbing” that military students were deprived of books due to what she described as partisan politics. Raskin added that children “want to go to class and learn, not be used as political pawns.”

Trump’s orders argued schools were “indoctrinating” children in “radical, anti-American ideologies” and undermining parental oversight. Democrats counter that reinstating the titles would restore inclusivity and depoliticize DoD classrooms.

“My legislation with Ranking Member Raskin is simple: stop the book bans at military schools,” Houlahan said.
