Washington, DC — A growing number of Democratic candidates are openly invoking Christian scripture in their 2026 midterm campaigns, aiming to appeal to moderate religious voters who have long favored Republicans.

According to a new Reuters report, more than a dozen faith leaders are running as Democrats for federal and state offices this year. Candidates such as Iowa state Sen. Sarah Trone Garriott, Alaska congressional candidate Matt Schultz, and Texas Senate hopeful James Talarico are tying biblical teachings to policy positions on immigration, abortion rights, and economic justice.

Schultz, a Presbyterian pastor, said, “I am pro-choice, not despite my Christian faith, but because of it,” arguing that scripture does not clearly define when life begins and that expanded healthcare and child care reduce abortions. Trone Garriott has linked Jesus’ call to care for the vulnerable to opposition to President Donald Trump’s immigration crackdown.

The strategy carries risks. Pew Research data show 40% of Democratic-leaning voters are religiously unaffiliated, while Trump won 83% of white evangelical voters in 2024. Political scientists say Democrats must balance a secular base with persuadable religious moderates as midterm campaigns intensify.
