A group of Democratic lawmakers introduced legislation Friday to block President Trump’s takeover of Washington, D.C.’s police department, accusing the White House of exceeding its authority under the D.C. Home Rule Act.

Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.) said Trump’s actions are a “hostile takeover” with no legal or emergency justification, adding the move is part of a broader effort to “militarize and federalize the streets of cities around America whose citizens voted against him.”

The move follows Trump’s deployment of National Guard troops to the capital and Attorney General Pam Bondi’s appointment of DEA Administrator Terry Cole as “emergency police commissioner.” Federal officials also rescinded restrictions on police immigration enforcement.

Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-D.C.) called the takeover “among the most egregious attacks on D.C. home rule in decades.” Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.), who introduced a companion Senate bill, labeled it a “raw power grab.”

The legislation is unlikely to advance in the GOP-controlled House but underscores Democratic opposition as Trump and Congress block D.C. from accessing $1 billion in local funds for policing and public services.
