Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.) announced Thursday he will introduce legislation requiring retailers to disclose how much Trump-era tariffs have increased product prices, calling it a transparency measure for consumers. The “Truth in Tariffs Act” is also set to be introduced in the Senate by Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.).
“If the President and his Cabinet of billionaires are forcing Americans to pay a lot more for consumer goods, the people have a right to know,” Raskin said on X. “His tariff charge is basically a national sales tax.”
The proposal follows President Trump’s sweeping trade agenda, which includes a 10% flat tariff on most imports, specific duties on metals and foreign vehicles, and a 145% tariff on Chinese goods, with exceptions for some electronics.
The idea of displaying tariff costs was briefly considered by Amazon, but the company dropped the plan amid backlash. “This was never approved and is not going to happen,” said Amazon spokesperson Tim Doyle.
The White House condemned the idea, calling it a “hostile and political act,” with Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt questioning why similar disclosures weren’t proposed during the Biden administration’s inflation spike.
President Trump said he spoke with Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos, who “solved the problem very quickly.” Bezos, once a frequent Trump critic, was seen seated prominently during Trump’s January inauguration.
