MUNICH, Germany — Prominent Democrats and a small number of Republicans sharply criticized President Donald Trump’s foreign policy approach during the Munich Security Conference, marking a rare break from the tradition of limiting public criticism of a sitting president overseas.

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton urged European leaders to counter what she described as Trump’s strategy of unpredictability, arguing that consistent resistance could blunt its impact. California Gov. Gavin Newsom accused Trump of economic recklessness, while Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez warned that threats involving Greenland undermine trust with allies.

Sen. Elissa Slotkin said uncertainty at home complicates U.S. pressure on Russian President Vladimir Putin, while Sen. Jeanne Shaheen emphasized bipartisan Senate support for Ukraine aid and sanctions.

Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer cautioned that strained ties with Canada could benefit China.

Republican Sen. Thom Tillis also voiced concern about tariffs and challenged remarks from Sen. Lindsey Graham regarding Greenland, stressing respect for its Indigenous population.

The criticism highlighted transatlantic tensions as European leaders assess U.S. reliability ahead of upcoming elections.
