Democrats are seeing surprising momentum in GOP strongholds, outperforming expectations in a Florida congressional special election and flipping a deeply Republican state Senate seat in Pennsylvania.
In Florida’s 6th District, Democrats are making a stronger-than-expected showing in a race to replace outgoing Rep. Mike Waltz (R). Democratic candidate Josh Weil has significantly outpaced Republican Randy Fine in fundraising—$9.7 million to less than $1 million—and has drawn national attention. Despite the district voting for Trump by 30 points in 2024, Republicans now warn the margin may be far narrower.
Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) acknowledged that GOP underperformance is likely, attributing it to candidate-specific weaknesses. Democrats say a strong showing—even short of a win—could signal broader discontent with Trump’s agenda.
Meanwhile, in Pennsylvania, Democrat James Malone won a special election in a district Trump carried by 15 points, defeating Republican Josh Parsons. The upset narrows the GOP’s advantage in the state Senate and energizes Democrats heading into 2026.
Democrats say these results reflect voter backlash to GOP leadership and growing enthusiasm on the left.
