House Democrats sharply criticized the newly unveiled Republican budget proposal on Wednesday, accusing the GOP of shifting trillions from working-class Americans to the wealthy.
Rep. Joe Neguse (D-Colo.) called it a “$4.5 trillion scheme to gut Medicaid… and ultimately reward billionaires and corporations,” while Rep. Jimmy Panetta (D-Calif.) warned it would cut Medicaid, food assistance, student loans, and sustainable energy programs.
The budget plan seeks to advance key Trump priorities, including immigration crackdowns, fossil fuel expansion, and extending the 2017 tax cuts, set to expire this year. It allows $4.5 trillion in new deficit spending while directing House committees to cut at least $1.5 trillion from federal programs. A $4 trillion debt ceiling increase is also included.
Democrats argue the plan will worsen the national debt despite GOP claims of fiscal responsibility. Rep. Brendan Boyle (D-Pa.) said Republicans “blow up the debt” to benefit millionaires and corporations.
Some also raised concerns about Trump’s Department of Government Efficiency, which faces legal scrutiny over job cuts and agency eliminations, with Rep. Veronica Escobar (D-Texas) alleging it benefits Elon Musk’s business interests.
