The Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), the largest leftist organization in the U.S., has officially supported the strategy of casting “uncommitted” votes during the Super Tuesday primaries. This move is a form of protest against President Joe Biden’s handling of the Israel-Hamas conflict, aiming to demonstrate support for the Democratic Party without endorsing any specific candidate.

The endorsement follows significant support for the “uncommitted” option in Michigan’s primary, where over 100,000 voters chose this route amidst escalating demands for Biden to advocate for a permanent cease-fire in the Israel-Hamas war. The DSA’s statement emphasizes that Biden’s continued support for Israel amid the ongoing violence in Gaza risks leading to a defeat in the upcoming election against Donald Trump, unless there is a significant policy shift.

This movement, spearheaded by Arab American leaders and progressive activists, including Rep. Rashida Tlaib, reflects a broader dissatisfaction with Biden’s approach to the conflict. Despite increasing international scrutiny over Israel’s actions and calls for a more definitive cease-fire, Biden has so far only endorsed a six-week pause in hostilities, while planning to airdrop humanitarian aid into Gaza.

The DSA’s criticism of Biden’s stance points to the severe humanitarian crisis in Gaza, referencing the recent “Flour Massacre” where over 100 civilians were killed, and questioning the U.S. commitment to ending the conflict as Palestinian casualties surpass 30,000.
