Washington, D.C. — Sen. Ed Markey (D-Mass.) on Tuesday called for President Donald Trump to be removed from office under the 25th Amendment, citing Trump’s alleged linkage between his push to acquire Greenland and not receiving the Nobel Peace Prize.
Markey posted on social media urging officials to “Invoke the 25th Amendment,” referencing a New York Times report that said Trump sent a message to Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre suggesting he felt less obligated to pursue peace after being passed over for the prize. According to the report, Trump allegedly wrote that failing to win the Nobel had emboldened him to pursue what he framed as U.S. interests, including an aggressive stance toward Greenland, a self-governing territory of Denmark.
Trump administration statements surrounding Greenland, including claims that global security requires U.S. control of the island, have not been independently verified and have drawn widespread criticism from foreign leaders and lawmakers. Trump has repeatedly alleged that Denmark cannot adequately defend Greenland and has tied U.S. military strength to global peace, assertions disputed by NATO allies.
Markey’s call is unlikely to gain traction. Invoking the 25th Amendment would require Vice President JD Vance and a majority of Trump’s Cabinet to declare the president unable to perform his duties, immediately transferring power to the vice president. Congress would then have 21 days to affirm the decision with a two-thirds vote in both chambers, or Trump would regain authority.
Markey’s comments come as Trump’s Greenland fixation continues to escalate, prompting growing concern among lawmakers who view the episode less as strategy and more as evidence of dangerously erratic judgment.
