Michael Hopkins, 38, a staffer for Rep. Joe Morelle (D-NY), was arrested Monday morning after Capitol Police discovered ammunition in his bag while entering a congressional office building. Officers found four ammunition magazines and 11 rounds of ammunition, including a high-capacity magazine, leading to charges of unlawful possession.
Hopkins reportedly told police he forgot the ammunition was in his bag. Rep. Morelle’s office stated it was cooperating with the investigation and reaffirmed its commitment to workplace safety.
The arrest follows heightened security concerns after multiple Democratic lawmakers and political figures faced bomb threats over the weekend. Threats were also directed at ten of former President Donald Trump’s Cabinet nominees and GOP Representatives Elise Stefanik (R-NY) and Lori Chavez DeRemer (R-OR).
