A coalition of Democratic-led states on the West Coast announced Wednesday the creation of the West Coast Health Alliance, a public health partnership formed in opposition to recent changes at the federal level. The alliance, led by California Gov. Gavin Newsom, Oregon Gov. Tina Kotek, and Washington Gov. Bob Ferguson, comes days after Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. dismissed the director of the CDC and restructured its vaccine advisory board with several vaccine skeptics.

In a joint statement, the governors said, “President Trump’s mass firing of CDC doctors and scientists — and his blatant politicization of the agency — is a direct assault on the health and safety of the American people.” The group pledged to issue “science-driven” guidance on vaccines to ensure public confidence.

Several former CDC leaders resigned following Kennedy’s moves, citing political interference in public health decisions. State health officials in California, Oregon, and Washington emphasized that vaccines are vital tools and warned that politicization undermines trust and endangers lives.

HHS spokesperson Andrew Nixon pushed back, accusing Democratic governors of eroding public trust during the COVID era with restrictive mandates. He maintained the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices will continue to provide “Gold Standard Science” in guiding federal immunization policy.
