Nearly two dozen Democratic attorneys general filed a lawsuit Thursday against the Trump administration, seeking to halt mass layoffs at the Department of Education. The lawsuit, filed in Massachusetts federal court, argues that the administration’s plan to cut half of the department’s workforce is unconstitutional.
The lawsuit comes two days after more than 1,300 employees were fired, including those overseeing education quality, student achievement, and grant administration. The cuts are part of Trump’s broader goal to dismantle the department, a move requiring congressional approval.
New York Attorney General Letitia James accused the administration of stripping resources from students, particularly low-income and disabled children. “This outrageous effort to deprive students of a quality education is reckless and illegal,” she said.
The 22 states and D.C. joining the suit have also challenged other education policy rollbacks, including a March 6 lawsuit over cuts to teacher grant programs.
