Democrat Catelin Drey has won an Iowa state Senate seat in a special election, flipping a Republican-held district and weakening the GOP’s dominance in the chamber, Decision Desk HQ projected.

Drey defeated Republican Christopher Prosch in the race to replace the late Sen. Rocky De Witt (R), who died of cancer in June. Her victory reduces Republicans’ margin to 33–17, ending their two-thirds supermajority. That shift means GOP lawmakers can no longer confirm gubernatorial nominees on a party-line vote.

The Democratic National Committee (DNC) heavily invested in the race, mobilizing 30,000 volunteers through phone- and text-banking operations. DNC Chair Ken Martin said the win shows voters are rejecting Republicans as “rubber stamps” for Donald Trump.

This is the second Iowa state Senate seat Democrats have flipped this year. Earlier victories included another Iowa district and a Trump-leaning Pennsylvania seat in March. Heather Williams of the Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee said the results are a “flashing warning” to Republicans heading into future contests.
