Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth accused the Biden administration of targeting his family with a politically motivated tax audit, posting a document online that claims he owes the IRS over $33,000. Hegseth shared the alleged IRS letter on social media, calling it a “total sham” and vowing to “never back down.”
The IRS has not commented on the matter, and Hegseth has not denied the accuracy of the tax claim. It remains unclear whether the audit stemmed from concerns over his financial filings or if it was a routine review. His tax records had previously drawn scrutiny during his confirmation hearings.
Republican lawmakers are expected to investigate the audit, with Elon Musk, head of President Trump’s Department of Government Efficiency, responding to Hegseth’s post by saying, “They love the low blows.” Past Cabinet nominees have faced tax-related controversies, though Hegseth has not suggested he will resign.
