Rep. Dean Phillips of Minnesota has officially ended his bid for the 2024 Democratic presidential nomination, shifting his support to President Joe Biden. In a statement during a radio interview on WCCO’s “The Chad Hartman Show,” Phillips highlighted his decision to suspend his campaign, emphasizing the importance of unity behind President Biden to counter what he perceives as the threat posed by Donald Trump. Phillips, who launched his campaign in October, had initially positioned himself as a challenger to Biden, citing concerns over the potential of Biden losing to Trump in the upcoming election.
Phillips stressed his commitment to not undermining Biden, despite his earlier criticisms, particularly regarding the handling of immigration at the southern border. His campaign platform closely mirrored Biden’s, with similar stances on key issues such as abortion rights and economic policies. The congressman also made it clear that he had no intentions of running as an independent if his bid for the nomination was unsuccessful.
The decision to withdraw from the presidential race follows his announcement in November that he would not seek re-election for his House seat. Phillips, who has been a part of the House since 2019 and is a member of the Bipartisan Problem Solvers Caucus, expressed his belief in the need for fresh leadership, citing Biden’s age and the challenges facing the country. His campaign saw moments of support, including an endorsement from the New Hampshire Union Leader ahead of the New Hampshire primary, where Phillips had been actively campaigning.
As Phillips ends his presidential campaign, he pledges to support Joe Biden’s re-election, emphasizing the necessity of defeating Donald Trump and advocating for unity and decency in the upcoming election.
