Sydney, New South Wales — At least 11 people were killed and 29 others hospitalized after a mass shooting at Australia’s iconic Bondi Beach on Sunday evening, authorities said, marking one of the deadliest attacks in the country in recent years.
New South Wales Police said emergency crews responded to reports of gunfire around 6:45 p.m. local time. Officials confirmed the incident is being treated as a terrorist attack and said it was deliberately aimed at the Jewish community. A public Hanukkah event was taking place at the beach at the time of the shooting.
Police said one man believed to be one of the shooters was killed at the scene. A second suspected shooter was taken into custody and remains in critical condition. Authorities did not immediately release details about the victims or the suspects’ identities.
Bondi Beach, located in Sydney’s eastern suburbs, is one of Australia’s most visited landmarks, drawing more than two million tourists in 2024. The area was quickly locked down as emergency responders treated victims and secured the scene.
Australian leaders condemned the attack, vowing a full investigation and increased security around religious and public gatherings.
