Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson, a former Democrat who joined the GOP last year, declared Thursday that his city is now a “sanctuary city from socialism” following New York Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani’s victory in NYC’s Democratic mayoral primary.
“If your city is (or is about to be) a sanctuary for criminals, mayhem, job-killing regulations, and failed socialist experiments, I have a modest invitation for you: MOVE TO DALLAS,” Johnson posted on X.
Johnson highlighted Dallas’s commitment to free enterprise, law enforcement, and low regulation. He previously opposed a local tax hike and has supported working with the Trump administration.
Mamdani, a self-described socialist, has proposed government-run grocery stores, rent control expansion, and BDS efforts targeting Israel, which has drawn criticism from opponents who accuse him of antisemitism.
Texas Gov. Greg Abbott endorsed Johnson’s messaging, saying the state will back Dallas in its mission.
Johnson was reelected mayor in 2023 before switching parties. He assumed office in 2019.
