Ed Martin, the acting U.S. attorney for Washington, D.C., who promoted Trump’s false election fraud claims, has formed a special unit to investigate election offenses. Martin, awaiting Senate confirmation, previously supported the “Stop the Steal” movement, served on a board raising money for Jan. 6 defendants, and represented at least three Capitol riot suspects, including a Proud Boys member.
Martin announced the “Special Unit: Election Accountability” in an email to his office, claiming Americans “do not have confidence in our election systems.” His past conspiratorial views on voter fraud have raised concerns about his motivations and jurisdiction.
Democrats quickly condemned the move. Sen. Alex Padilla (D-Calif.) warned the unit could be “more focused on attacking political enemies than protecting voting rights.” Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.) called it an attempt to “install a nationwide policy of ‘heads I win, tails you lose.’”
Election experts have cast doubt on whether Martin’s unit will restore confidence in voting or simply fuel more baseless fraud claims.
