Republican mayoral candidate Curtis Sliwa said he will remain in the New York City mayoral race, rejecting calls to withdraw despite polling at 17%, according to Decision Desk HQ. During an interview with The Hill on NewsNation, Sliwa declared, “I’m the only Republican candidate. I’m the law and order candidate. Why would I want to drop out?”
The race has drawn record early voter turnout, with participation five times higher than in 2021. Progressive Democrat Zohran Mamdani and former Governor Andrew Cuomo are battling for City Hall, while President Donald Trump has questioned Sliwa’s chances, saying he would “rather have a Democrat than a communist,” referring to Mamdani.
Sliwa dismissed Trump’s comments, arguing that if anyone should withdraw, it’s Cuomo, who has lagged since losing the Democratic primary by 13 points. He also criticized both Democratic contenders on crime, labeling Cuomo the “architect” of no-cash bail and Mamdani his “apprentice.”
Breaking with Trump on funding threats, Sliwa said he would “negotiate, not punish” the city if federal aid is at risk. Election Day is November 4, with early voting continuing through the weekend.
