New York City mayoral candidate Andrew Cuomo on Monday rejected rival Zohran Mamdani’s claim that he is President Donald Trump’s preferred choice in the race, calling it “ludicrous.” Cuomo argued instead that Republicans are hoping Mamdani wins, saying his democratic socialist agenda would give the GOP ammunition to portray Democrats as extreme.
“If you’re a Republican, you are praying for Mamdani to win,” Cuomo told CNBC’s “Squawk Box.” He framed the contest as a clear choice between himself and Mamdani, despite incumbent Mayor Eric Adams and Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa remaining in the field. Both Adams and Sliwa have said they will continue their campaigns after speculation they might accept Trump-backed roles in exchange for stepping aside.
Cuomo, who lost to Mamdani in the Democratic primary, said the general election is “much different” and predicted the race would shift before November. He described Mamdani as “a radical socialist, anti-business, anti-public safety,” adding that New York is “a business capital” not aligned with such policies.
Mamdani has countered Cuomo’s criticism, saying his platform addresses affordability and public safety more effectively. Over the weekend he campaigned with Sen. Bernie Sanders and on Monday touted an endorsement from a retired NYPD veteran.
