President Donald Trump on Friday defended Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chair Brendan Carr after criticism from Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) over Carr’s warning to ABC following Jimmy Kimmel’s remarks about the killing of Charlie Kirk.

Cruz, speaking on his “Verdict” podcast, said Carr’s comments sounded “right out of Goodfellas” and were “dangerous as hell,” warning that government threats to restrict media could ultimately harm conservatives. “If the government gets in the business of saying, ‘We don’t like what you say… we’re going to ban you from the airwaves,’ that will end up bad for conservatives,” Cruz said.

Trump pushed back, calling Carr “a great American patriot” and “a courageous person.” He argued that Carr is standing up against the misuse of airwaves, though he did not specify what he considered illegal. Trump also repeated his frustrations with negative media coverage, adding that despite it, he still won the election.

Carr told conservative host Benny Johnson that ABC, as a license-holder, must serve the public interest, warning, “We can do this the easy way or the hard way,” and suggesting networks take action on Kimmel or face further FCC review.
