Vice President JD Vance emerged as the overwhelming favorite for the 2028 Republican presidential nomination in the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) straw poll, securing 61% of the vote among attendees.
Vance’s lead far surpassed other contenders, with former Trump adviser Steve Bannon receiving 12% and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis earning 7%. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY) each garnered 3%, while Donald Trump Jr., Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, and former candidate Vivek Ramaswamy received 2% support.
During his CPAC speech, Vance defended his recent remarks at the Munich Security Conference, which drew criticism from European allies. He also praised the administration’s rapid implementation of executive orders and highlighted Musk’s role in the Department of Government Efficiency’s cost-cutting efforts.
Despite Vance’s rising profile, Trump has not explicitly endorsed him as his successor. Instead, he has continued to express strong support for Elon Musk, urging the tech billionaire to be “more aggressive” in his government reform efforts.
