A federal judge will decide Friday whether to extend a temporary block on the Trump administration’s plan to cut medical research funding, a move scientists warn could endanger patients and stall lifesaving discoveries.
The new National Institutes of Health (NIH) policy caps “indirect” research costs—funding for lab space, safety measures, and administrative support—at 15%, slashing hundreds of millions from studies on Alzheimer’s, cancer, and other diseases. The NIH argues the cuts would save $4 billion annually, but universities and hospitals say they will cripple critical research.
A coalition of 22 states and research institutions sued to block the move, calling it illegal and defying bipartisan congressional protections. The administration argues that NIH has authority to modify grant terms and that plaintiffs have not proven “irreparable injury.”
Johns Hopkins officials warn the cuts could halt hundreds of NIH-funded studies, while the University of Wisconsin fears clinical trials may be canceled. Judge Angel Kelley will now determine whether the funding restrictions will take effect.
