Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) announced his candidacy to replace Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) as Republican leader, setting up a hotly contested race. Cornyn has a track record of seeking consensus while leading the fight against harmful policies. He believes the Senate is “broken” and he could play a “major role” in restoring it.

McConnell declared that he would step down as leader in November, leaving Republicans preparing for their first open leadership election in nearly two decades. Cornyn is expected to face tough competition from Senate Minority Whip John Thune (R-S.D.) and Sen. John Barrasso (R-Wyo.) for the post. Thune and Barrasso have yet to officially announce their candidacy.

Cornyn is considered a strong candidate, having served as one of McConnell’s top allies in the upper chamber.
