Republicans have introduced the Dismantle DEI Act, aimed at banning diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs and funding within the federal government. The bill, introduced by Sen. JD Vance (R-Ohio) on Wednesday, seeks to eliminate all federal DEI initiatives and cease funding to agencies, contractors, organizations, and educational accreditation bodies involved in DEI efforts.

Sen. Vance stated, “The DEI agenda is a destructive ideology that breeds hatred and racial division. It has no place in our federal government or anywhere else in our society.” He emphasized that taxpayer dollars should not support DEI policies.

Rep. Michael Cloud (R-Texas), the House sponsor, criticized DEI initiatives for fostering division and racial bias, advocating for merit and equality instead of equity in government institutions.

The bill follows a 2021 executive order from President Biden aimed at promoting diversity and removing structural barriers for underserved communities. Republicans have long opposed DEI, viewing it as part of a “woke” agenda. For instance, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and Texas Gov. Greg Abbott have enacted similar measures at the state level.

The Dismantle DEI Act also aims to disband the Office of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility and the Chief Diversity Officers Executive Council. Sen. Rick Scott (R-Fla.) and Sen. Eric Schmitt (R-Mo.) support the act, criticizing DEI as a radical ideology and a misuse of taxpayer funds.
