Congress has placed a hold on a $1 billion arms sale to Israel, which includes 4,700 1,000-pound bombs worth over $700 million and Caterpillar-built armored bulldozers valued at $300 million. The Wall Street Journal first reported that Democratic lawmakers exercised the hold, signaling a departure from the usual bipartisan backing of military aid to Israel.
The move coincides with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s visit to Washington, his first since Trump returned to the White House. While the U.S. typically views arms sales to Israel as a national security investment, Democrats have increased scrutiny over Netanyahu’s handling of the Gaza conflict.
Trump could attempt to override the hold, as he did in 2019 with an $8 billion arms deal to Saudi Arabia and other allies. Meanwhile, Senators Brian Schatz and Chris Van Hollen vow to stall State Department nominees over USAID cuts.
