CNN has announced the permanent shutdown of its opinion section as part of ongoing changes at the network. Some writers received an email on Wednesday informing them of the decision, with an opinion editor stating, “CNN has decided to shut down the opinion section. I hope our paths cross elsewhere!”

A senior executive confirmed to The Hill that CNN decided at the beginning of the month to sunset the opinion vertical on CNN.com, eliminating the standalone Opinion section. The executive referenced Claire Atkinson’s Substack, The Media Mix, which detailed the closure set for August.

The opinion section featured diverse viewpoints on topics like the 2024 presidential election, the Olympics, and Generation Z social media trends. The current homepage includes a column by Veronica Goodman discussing Republican policy priorities ahead of a potential second Trump presidency.

CNN CEO Mark Thompson has previously discussed reducing spending to improve the network’s position following a challenging year marked by mass layoffs and lower ratings after Jeff Zucker’s departure.
