WASHINGTON, D.C. — Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth invited controversial pastor Doug Wilson to deliver a sermon at the Pentagon this week, prompting debate over religion’s role within the federal government and the military.
Wilson led a 15-minute sermon Tuesday as part of a monthly Christian worship series Hegseth launched at the Department of Defense last May. Speaking to military personnel in an auditorium and broadcast internally on the Pentagon’s television network, Wilson prayed for what he called a “black swan revival,” urging a renewed Christian awakening in the United States.
A Defense Department social media account later posted a photo of Hegseth praying alongside Wilson, stating, “We are One Nation Under God.”
Wilson, founder of the Communion of Reformed Evangelical Churches in Moscow, Idaho, has previously argued that homosexuality should be criminalized, that women should submit to their husbands, and that the 19th Amendment granting women the right to vote should be repealed. He has also publicly advocated for making the U.S. a Christian nation.
Critics, including Army veteran and congressional candidate Fred Wellman, called the event an unconstitutional erosion of church-state separation. Pentagon press secretary Kingsley Wilson defended the invitation, stating Hegseth is “a proud Christian” and supports the 19th Amendment.
