China on Tuesday warned it will “resolutely take countermeasures” if President Donald Trump follows through on his threat to impose an additional 50% tariff on Chinese imports.
In a statement carried by state media, China’s Commerce Ministry said, “China will fight until the end if the U.S. side is bent on going down the wrong path,” accusing the U.S. of “blackmail.”
Trump on Monday wrote on Truth Social that if China did not withdraw its newly announced 34% tariffs on U.S. goods by Tuesday, the U.S. would impose the new tariffs starting Wednesday. The administration also threatened to cancel upcoming trade talks with Beijing.
Markets have been volatile in response to Trump’s sweeping tariff measures, with economists warning of increased recession risk.
A Chinese Commerce Ministry spokesperson called the threatened increase “a mistake on top of a mistake,” stating that “China will never accept this.”
