China confirmed its leader, Xi Jinping, will send Vice President Han Zheng as a special envoy to President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration in Washington, D.C., on Monday. The move, described as “unprecedented,” seeks to reduce tensions after Trump threatened significant tariffs on China, according to the Financial Times.
Trump invited Xi to foster dialogue with allies and competitors alike, incoming White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said.
China’s Foreign Ministry emphasized “mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, and win-win cooperation” in its statement, expressing readiness to enhance dialogue, manage differences, and pursue a stable U.S.-China relationship.
This marks a sharp contrast to President Biden’s inauguration, when Beijing imposed sanctions on Trump administration officials. The gesture underscores Beijing’s willingness to reset ties with the incoming administration.
