Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson signed an executive order Saturday resisting President Donald Trump’s plan to send federal officers into the city for an immigration crackdown.

Johnson’s “Protecting Chicago Initiative” directs city agencies to guard residents’ rights and bars Chicago police from aiding federal authorities in immigration enforcement, traffic stops, or checkpoints. The order also requires CPD officers to remain identifiable in uniform rather than wear masks like federal agents.

“We will not have our police officers deputized to do traffic stops and checkpoints for the president,” Johnson said, calling Trump “reckless and out of control” and “the biggest threat to our democracy.” He launched a Family Preparedness Campaign in multiple languages to help immigrant households plan for possible detentions.

The federal surge could begin Sept. 5 and last 30 days, officials said, following similar actions in Los Angeles and Washington, D.C. Trump argued Chicago’s crime requires intervention, blasting Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker as “weak.”

Illinois leaders have rejected the plan, with Johnson vowing, “We do not want to see tanks in our streets. That’s not who we are as a nation.”
