A union representing Centers for Disease Control and Prevention employees is urging the Trump administration to denounce vaccine disinformation after a deadly shooting at CDC headquarters in Atlanta.

The suspect, identified as Patrick Joseph White, 30, of Kennesaw, Georgia, died in the incident, which also claimed the life of DeKalb County Police Officer David Rose. White had reportedly blamed COVID-19 vaccines for his health problems.

AFGE Local 2883 said the attack “compounds months of mistreatment, neglect, and vilification” of CDC staff, calling for a “clear and unequivocal stance” from CDC Director Susan Monarez and Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., a noted vaccine skeptic. The union argued such condemnation is essential to prevent violence against scientists.

Monarez said she was “heartbroken” over the shooting. Kennedy condemned the attack, stating, “No one should face violence while working to protect the health of others,” and pledged support for CDC staff. HHS spokesperson Andrew Nixon said Kennedy “remains fully committed” to employee safety, but did not directly address the union’s demand regarding vaccine misinformation.
