The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is launching a study on potential links between vaccines and autism, despite decades of research finding no connection, according to multiple reports.
The move comes as measles cases surge in the U.S., with over 150 cases and two deaths reported in Texas and New Mexico. Vaccination rates among kindergartners have declined since 2019, falling from 95% to 92.7%, with some states as low as 79.6%.
The study follows Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s history of questioning vaccine safety. During a recent Cabinet meeting, Kennedy downplayed the measles outbreak, calling it “ordinary”, and emphasized parental choice in a Fox News op-ed.
President Donald Trump mentioned autism rates in a congressional address Tuesday, stating, “We’re going to find out what it is,” while praising Kennedy’s work.
It remains unclear how the study will be conducted or whether Kennedy is directly involved. Public health experts warn the study could fuel vaccine hesitancy amid efforts to combat misinformation.
